Open Call Corner

Established in 1986 La Luz de Jesus Gallery is the brainchild of entrepreneur and art collector Billy Shire, considered primarily responsible for fostering a new school of California art and prompting JUXTAPOZ Magazine to dub him “the Peggy Guggenheim of Lowbrow.” We are deemed the birthplace of Lowbrow and Pop-Surrealism within the art world. Although placed amongst many other galleries in Los Angeles, we continue to pioneer figurative and narrative art from the underground scene of L.A.

In 1995 Billy Shire moved his entire empire back to the neighborhood where it all began. The new (and current) location boasts over 6,500 square feet of retail space in a 10,000 square foot building, with a private back lot that hosts monthly events and parties.

Details Magazine calls “the best party in town.” La Luz de Jesus Gallery’s art openings on the first Friday of each month.

To locals, it’s simply known as “doing First Friday at La Luz”

Many artists made it here and so will many more. Despite our size, we will always be at the forefront for counter-culture in the art world. We will always be a home to strange events and colorful people as we offer our space to creatives to fulfill their dream projects.

La Luz de Jesus has been and will always be the “Second Home for Creatives”
