Pop art as always been a lightning rod for the art world. By depicting the power that materialism and the cult of celebrity have in our everyday life, artists create a tongue-in-cheek critique of the current culture. Often illustrated with the same slick design and candy-coated
palette of popular advertisements and TV shows, Pop artists insert their narratives and reflections into recognizable imagery to satirize the powers that be.

Los Angeles-based artist, Dale Sizer, does exactly this with his newest portrait series that portrays larger-than-life icons of the art world, such as Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol and others, superimposed onto the opening sequence of Looney Tunes, wearing the foldable x-ray vision glasses made popular in midcentury comic book advertisements. The arts have always attracted the eccentric, but the subjects chosen for these portraits have become common caricatures of what it means to be an artist. Furthermore, the legendary artists depicted in these portraits have almost garnered more fame for their celebrity/personality than for their artwork. Having worked as an animation background painter in the past, Sizer’s comedic critiques highlight the pseudo-seriousness of the blue-chip artworld and the cartoonish nature of how artists seek to be perceived and represented.

With this show, Dale Sizer has made an irreverent homage to the greats of art history. We invite you to reframe how you see these seemingly untouchable icons and poke a little fun at the grandiose institutions that rule your life with these inspired airbrush portraits.
