Christopher Bales & Krystopher Sapp: Assemblage Duo Exhibition
Duo exhibition of two long time exhibiting assemblage artists who humorously share the same name; Krys and Chris.
La Luz de Jesus Gallery is excited to announce the upcoming exhibition of Christopher x Krystopher, a duo assemblage exhibition with Christopher Bales and Krystopher Sapp. The exhibition opens April 4th and closes April 27th. The free to the public reception is Friday April 4th from 7pm to 11pm.
Inspired by his worst nightmares, Krystopher Sapp crafts narrative sculptures out of found objects that shows his fascination with man-made atrocities. His themes range from post-apocalypse, genocide, prison-industrial complexes and their surrealist disillusions. Sapp has been known to use real-antiqued weapons, real teeth, and real animals in his work. Breathing in new life to objects that once were used for greed, hate and vanity into objects stripped of their once sinister past. These artworks are now exhibited to showcase an honest light and truth of a dark and fucked-up world.
Christopher Bales is often mistaken for creating “steampunk” artwork, but his work is much more timeless than a funky era of fashion birthed out of Renaissance Faires and that one animated movie Atlantis. Christopher Bales makes alter-like displays of antiqued wood-works, brass-works, and paintings in which the stories played out are ones of the intersection of science and religion. These are themes are that are intersectional with industrialization but continue to supersede within pop-culture. Bales questions authority through juxtapositions of morality and scientific pursuits and juxtapositions of religious institutions and imperialism.
Together this exhibition is curated to exemplify the narrative skills of two assemblage artists working with found objects in a way that is both uplifting forgotten objects but also forgotten history. Chris and Krys are both dedicated to illuminating the harsher truths of society in a way that is both tragically beautiful and beautifully tragic.
