Lonesome Town-Nothing is Sacred
Exhibition: March 26 – May 1, 2022
La Luz de Jesus Gallery is pleased to present Nothing is Sacred, a solo exhibition featuring work by Lonesome Town from March 26th-May 1st, 2022.
In art, context is everything, and it ultimately informs our experience of it and our relation to it. Nothing is Sacred is a show that challenges the concept of context and art at its very core. Lonesome Town, is known for the street installations of his work that viewers must stumble upon to experience. Without the surrounding white gallery walls, viewers may be unsure how to evaluate the work or even see the pieces as artwork. Furthermore, Lonesome Town utilizes found objects as his canvas, adding another rich layer to consider conceptually.
Lonesome Town’s work is full of whimsy and anthropomorphizes often forgotten or discarded objects, like a couch found on the side of the road or a painting, found at a secondhand store. By selecting these objects, Lonesome Town breathes new life into them, recontextualizes them, and ties himself to them by adding his signature sad clown faces. The disarming cartoonish and childlike sad faces create a visceral reaction in the viewer, causing them to reflect on the nature of being discarded and how frequently we are both the perpetrator of such action and the victim of it. Nothing is Sacred invites you to get close to these pieces and peel back the layers of creation to find a more profound experience of Lonesome Town’s work and the objects we surround ourselves with daily.
