Maryrose Crook- Sequin Suns in the Garden of Darkness

Exhibition: November 2 – December 2, 2018
Reception: Fri. November 2, 8-11 PM

La Luz de Jesus Gallery is pleased to present Sequin Suns in the Garden of Darkness, Maryrose Crook’s second solo painting exhibition on view from November 2 – November 25, 2018 with an opening reception on Friday November 2, from 8-11p.

Sequin Suns in the Garden of Darkness is a continuation of Crook’s investigation of a universal consciousness through her complex and hallucinatory dreamscapes. Influenced by encounters from her native land Aotearoa (New Zealand), and Joshua Tree, California, Crook observes these scapes as portals for creatures who seem to inhabit the world with a heightened sense of instinctual intelligence and purpose.

“I do have a sense of the visible world being a very tiny reflection of the true nature of existence and I feel that by painting these unreal worlds, in a kind of trance state, that I edge slightly closer to whatever that mystery is.”

Crook naturally gravitates toward the adorned styles of the Baroque and Rococo in order to reveal the collective ego that blankets the way in which the world is perceived. The extreme decorative style of her compositions also echoes the depravity of nature from human consumption.

Crook has shown widely in New Zealand, as well as the United States, Berlin and China. Crook’s work is held in public and private collections in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Germany.
