Women of the Sun: Bunny Yeager in Mexico
Curated by La Luz de Jesus Gallery and Nico B (Cult Epics)
June 13- July 5th, 2020
La Luz de Jesus Gallery and Cult Epics are thrilled to present “Women of the Sun: Bunny Yeager in Mexico” These never before seen images were shot on a trip to areas around Chichén Itzá, Dzibilchaltún, Uxmal in Mexico during the year of 1966.
Through the images in this exhibition, the viewer is presented with the breathless grandeur of ancient ruined temples juxtaposed against models in a state of nature. Bunny is at her artistic best with these photographs capturing the powerful female form. With Bunny’s keen eye, the observer sees not merely the usual pin-up photograph but instead strong, dynamic warrior goddesses.
Linnea Eleanor “Bunny” Yeager (1929-2014) was a pioneer in the world of glamour. Famed as the photographer most responsible for turning Bettie Page into a legendary pin-up icon, Bunny’s pictures elevated the populist cheesecake style of the day to a rarely achieved form of high art. From the mid-1950s and through the 1960s, her photographs of nude and semi-clad women (often wearing Bunny’s groundbreaking bikini fashion designs) were so visually arresting and innovative- and became so ubiquitous in men’s magazines such as Playboy- that they helped to define the burgeoning sexual revolution.
