Beer Is Art & Max Grundy "Ozone Schmozone"

September 6 – 29, 2013
Closing Party: Sunday, Sept. 29th, 7-10 PM

Max Grundy “Ozone Schmozone”

Throughout human history mankind has always enjoyed a advantageous relationship with machines to counter the oppressive and destructive qualities of nature. Drills create mines to collect oar and combines harvest grain. All this for man to shield and protect himself from a natural environment that sees him as nothing more than a food source.

This set of images Depicts this natural world as our adversary. Our machines have become elevated to a modern day messiah and redeemer. They are a tool and a weapon to protect us from natures assault on humanity.

After the apocalypse we will only use what we can recycle or build from our own two hands. When the grid collapses our hi-tech devices will be useless. This set of imagery is inspired by the idea of a future primitivism. Fear and the basic human desire to protect ones life will once again become paramount. Only mans unique wisdom and ingenuity can accomplish this.

In our future world something has gone horribly wrong. Many things once deemed as socially and environmentally “responsible” will fall by the wayside. When danger and fear become all consuming our human goal would become singular. We must struggle to reach safety from all threat. In short FEAR IS THE NEW BEAUTY.

A society that has become consumed by boredom and the dramas of strangers daily lives must be purged. The only cure for this cancerous boredom is to be baptized by fire and born again where we are once again forced to fight for our lives like the explorers and frontiersmen of old.

This set of imagery is inspired by the desire to fight back against a toxic planet that is trying to swallow us up. Only strength, ingenuity and self reliance can save us. No longer can we live our lives as elite earth worshipers. We must selfishly revolt against this natural environment that wants to erase our existence.

When mankind’s basic need for survival comes into play, a social dogma of fanatic environmentalism will be cleansed from society. My artwork embraces fundamental mechanical technology and its ability to defend us against a toxic planet. This will be a war with no flags. Humanity will stand against the natural world.

Beer Is Art: The Coaster Show

We’ve all done it. We’ve sat at the bar, drinking a beer and doodled on a coaster.

But most of us aren’t the extremely skilled painters, illustrators, animators, tattooists, sculptors or collage artists that are featured in this exhibition that takes a love of craft brewing and elevates it to high art.

The folks behind L.A. Beer Week produced a custom canvas for some of our favorite gallery folks to do what they do best, and transform a 4″ tondo coaster into museum worthy exhibition pieces.

The closing party for this exhibition will welcome back a handful of craft brewers and many of the artists for the last opportunity to see all of the pieces in context. Sunday, September 29, 7-10 PM.

This isn’t just the same, old crop of folks you see in every group show across town. There are a lot of participants who we quite frankly can’t believe we got to participate. Maybe it’s because we kept the rules simple: We told them to do whatever they wanted. Whether you love beer or don’t, the art will blow your mind.

But there will be some amazing beer here, too!
